CADIZ CITY, Negros Occidental—Scouts from Dr. Vicente F. Gustillo Memorial National High School (DVFGMNHS) celebrated the 124th Philippine Independence Day in advance on Saturday, June 11.
The school’s Scout club—Vicentenian Engaged Scouts Association or VESA lead the activity participated by around 100 Scouts of DVFGMNHS. According to its president, Eagle Scout Dwen G. Bayon-on, the activity was part of the series of activities they are doing to boost the morale of their members after a two-year lockdown due to the pandemic.
“We have been locked inside our house for more than two years. Our Scouts get to know more new members and bond with their old friends through these activities,” Bayon-on said.
“Our independence is worth celebrating, we have to. It is for us to not forget the sacrifices of our heroes,” he added.
The activity started with a formal opening program followed by discussions about the History and Evolution of the Philippine Flag, as well as the Heraldic Code of the Philippines.
The Scouts were also grouped to form four crews named Makakalikasan, Makatao, Makabansa, and MakaDiyos. In the afternoon, the groups showcased their talents in acting by presenting different historical events in the Philippines.
The Vicentenian Scouts as they call themselves proved that they are aware of our history and give importance to the contributions of our foreparents. The activity concluded with a closing message from Bayon-on.
“May we never forget how and why we celebrate this honorable day. Being able to stand here today, walking without the fear of being arrested by colonizers, is what our heroes gifted us. May we never take our freedom for granted,” Bayon-on said.
He also added that they will conduct more activities in the future in preparation for their school’s charter anniversary.
